Who Is John Fowler?
Seventy years after he invested six shillings and sixpence -33p on his first holiday home newspaper advert, Exmouth born John Fowler has built a hugely successful, multi-million-pound holiday company.
In an inspirational rag to riches story, John Fowler left the Merchant Navy without a job or a home and just £300.
He noticed the new demand for self-catering holidays, away from traditional boarding houses and hotels. He bought an old pre-war caravan for £100, refurbished it and persuaded a local farmer to let him site it on his land.
There was no electricity, and the only facilities were a chemical toilet and an outside tap for drinking water. Still, the cosy caravan in a peaceful, rural setting was a short stroll to the sandy beach and a bus ride to Newquay.
When responses to his advert began to come in, John invested all the income in more caravans and a small holiday business was born.
How Many John Fowler Sites Are There?
Today, more than 300,000 holidaymakers stay at the 13 John Fowler Holidays parks in stunning locations in Cornwall, Devon, Somerset and Wales.
The family-run company employs about 1000 people across the South West to provide happy family holidays, always being John Fowler’s aim.
